The Big O (THE ビッグオー Za Biggu Ō) is a Japanese anime series created by director Kazuyoshi Katayama and designer Keiichi Sato for Sunrise Animation. The writing staff was assembled by the series' head writer, Chiaki J. Konaka. The series is designed as a tribute to Japanese and Western shows from the 1960s and 1970s, it is done in the style of film noir and combines the feel of a detective show with the mecha genre of anime. Forty years ago, the minds of Paradigm City's inhabitants were wiped clean of all recollections of the past. In the pilot episode, Roger Smith is introduced as Paradigm City's top negotiator. As the episode begins, he is delivering the ransom for a girl named Dorothy, who had been kidnapped from her father, a rich industrialist named Saldano. After the exchange, Saldano arrives and reveals that the Dorothy Roger they had obtained was actually an android fake. When Roger realizes Beck isn't playing fair, he activates the briefcase carrying the ransom and it flies out of Beck's car.

The Big O is a bit of a blast from my personal anime past. It first aired in the UK when the Cartoon Network was trying to diversify its programming and had a lovely after-school anime slot (at least, I think it was during this time.) It was, frankly, the first time I had seen a giant robot series, and at the time I couldn’t really appreciate it and I personally preferred the likes of Tenchi Muyo and Sailor Moon which were also on at the time in competing or adjacent time slots. Quite a few years have passed since then however, and I am delighted to give the series a second viewing to reappraise my opinions, especially given its creator Hajime Yatate's past outings; Mobile Suit Gundam series, Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne, just to name a few.
